Screening procedure of different parameters in propolis from Holguin province; Cuba
Main Article Content
Abstract
The strong relationship between plant origin of propolis and its chemical, organoleptic and biological characteristics arises, which means that there are different types of propolis, which should determine the characteristics of it in each of the regions. The wide diversity in the chemical composition of this bee product and its widespread use in the food and pharmaceutical, cosmetic and alimentary have resulted in the need for quality control and standardization. This study aimed to understand the behavior of physical-chemical parameters and anti-microbial effect of propolis collected by scraping the system in different apiaries belonging to the province of Holguin. By determining moisture, oxidation rate, soluble substances in n-hexane, soluble in alcohol and mechanical impurities by Soxhlet substances, the antibacterial activity was also determined against the strain of Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923.It was obtained as a result that the mean values of soluble solids content in n-hexane soluble content of alcohol did not meet the specifications of other countries. While mechanical impurities, moisture or heat loss and oxidation index were lower than the permissible limits established in the laws or regulations of other countries known average values. All propolis samples showed antibacterial effect against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC strain 25923.
