Handling and cleaning of propolized meshes
Main Article Content
Abstract
Propolis is a product that is difficult to handle because it sticks to hands and clothes in hot weather, so it requires a lot of effort to collect and handle it. The production method through the use of plastic mesh establishes a practical, comfortable and hygienic method. This work aims was to know the proper handling that the meshes used for the collection of propolis should receive during the process of extracting the raw material and its subsequent washing for the conditions of Cuban beekeeping. For the study, three apiaries were chosen where the meshes were placed in the hives. After being removal, a manual extraction was performed and the grams of propolis per mesh was determined. After that, two successive washes of the meshes were carried out, one with ethanol and the other with water. The grams of raw material adhered after each wash were established and the yield was calculated based on the total product collected by the mesh. The content of useful raw material propolis obtained was variable. The grams of raw material extracted from the meshes, after washing, showed that the meshes retain product after manual extraction. As conclusions, a double washing after the manual extraction process was proposed for the cleaning of the meshes used. The first with ethanol and the second with low-pressure water jets that remove the remaining matter from the meshes.
