Abstract

The current study, presents an overview of the current situation and problems of the small hive beetle (Aethina tumida Murray) in México. Due to its rapid spread, the small hive beetle is studied increasingly because of its economic importance and biological significance. The purpose of this research is to integrate, analyze and describe the current status of this endemic parasitic pest of the honeybee colonies in our country. The small hive beetles (SHB), are native to sub-Saharan Africa where they exist in colonies of African subspecies. Although the SHB rarely inflicts severe damage on African colonies, the European honeybees often fail to contain these beetles. That means that in some way, the European honeybees are more susceptible and much less efficient for fighting against Aethina tumida. Thus, this document describes important characteristics with regards to distribution, description, life cycle, economic importance, management and control of the small hive beetle.
