Abstract

In Cuba as in the rest of the world there are different productive levels in beekeeping, related to the number of hives owned by each beekeeper. That determines different levels of environmental pollution from each beekeeper. Therefore, the aim of this study is to compare the polluting effect from large and small beekeepers from the municipality of Artemisa, Cuba. It was determined annually by beekeeper the amount of hours of direct work with the hives and the volume of liquid waste discharges as result of hive material disinfection. Sampled beekeepers works a median of 240 h per year directly with the bees which represent 215 kg of carbon emitted to the atmosphere as matter of burned wood for smokers. On the other side, 350 L of liquid wastes as results of colony material disinfection are dump, being the smaller beekeepers as a whole 4, 5 times more pollutant than the big one. It is propose to disinfect hive material with hot paraffin, the use of more protective suits and the stimulation of the breeding and reproduction of more gentle bees.
