Abstract

Nectar samples were taken from black olive (Bucida buceras L.) flowers in two different years’ blooms. No significant qualitative or quantitative differences were found in terms of the amount of nectar per flower or in terms of the concentration of the sampled nectar. The mean volume of nectar secretion per flower at the time of extraction (10:00 am) and the amount of sugars that compose it in two samples from two different year blooms are reported by high-performance liquid chromatography analysis. In flowering 1 the samples are poor in sucrose and in flowering 2 the nectar is rich in sucrose, which may explain the differences between the honey production of black olive between one year and another. These variations can influence the attractiveness of the nectar for bees and the honey productivity of black olive forests.
